Aproveitando a thread, sempre que vejo estas perguntas aqui, a resposta é sempre a mesma, cria WS para fazer a ponte. Entao pergunto: Realmente não tem como conectar direto pelo android?
Bom fui olhar a API e achei o pacote java.sql: http://developer.android.com/reference/java/sql/package-summary.html
Olhando por cima, daria sim pra conectar a qualquer BD, inclusive com estes dizeres: Note that you must provide your own JDBC driver.
Nem estou questionando se é a melhor opção, apenas que nunca vi ninguem responder, sempre chegam e ja falam pra criar um webservice pra fazer o serviço.
