Detalhes do projecto:

The volunteer will be based within the Roma project, working mostly with children from the Roma community in Belfast and also with Mothers/Parents.  The project has a few different elements:

-          School support works with children of the Roma community living around the area and is a new service which has been developed during 2011.  It aims to assist with the development of social skills, to help the children understand the basics of appropriate behaviour within structured environments such as the classroom and to listen to and follow instructions.  For some of the children, this can include developing the ability to sit at a desk or to hang up a coat.  The activities include developmental play and for the older children especially, a homework club.  Currently the project runs Monday to Thursday afternoons.

-          Mother and Toddlers group, which has only recently commenced, since there are issues of trust within the Roma community in Belfast and it has taken time to develop relationships.  Some of the families involved in the project were victims of racial abuse and harassment which was so extreme they were forced from their homes.  There was a blaze of media publicity around these events and while the families have been safely rehoused in a different part of Belfast, there are still great sensitivities in working with the Roma community and a feeling of mistrust from the Roma families in relation to the wider Northern Ireland community.

-          Pre-School Group has also recently been developed and runs three mornings per week, engaging children in developmental play activities.  The aim of the project is similar to the school support group in that it helps prepare the children for the school environment, teaching them basic numeracy and literacy skills i.e. number groups, alphabet etc.  It also introduces them to appropriate behaviour and expectations in preparation for primary school.

The volunteer will be involved in a range of activities.  It is possible they could accompany a staff member to the local school to collect the children and walk with them to the project.  Or they may be involved in preparing the rooms and materials.  The volunteer will be involved in the developmental play and homework activities, assisting the staff.  It is hoped that the volunteer can help to contribute ideas for new or additional activities.  For example, they could present information about their own country and exchange information about culture, food, lifestyle and language, encouraging the children to present aspects of their own lives and also incorporating key elements of traditional Northern Ireland life.
