Fica a dica que no android studio o template de maps ten dois arquivos de string un no folder debug/res e outro no folder relase/res no cual colocar o valor da api key, caso colocar no debug/res nao funciona

Da mesma forma que vc fez pra criar o debug vc faz para criar o release.

É só informar o path da sua keystore e o alias dela.

O que vc deve ter colocado no console é a chave debug, vc precisa gerar a chave release. Por isso que quando vc gera o apk release o mapa não aparece.

É isso que o Gorio está lhe mostrando.
